With the recent coronavirus outbreak there are more and more reports of people feeling isolated and experiencing increased loneliness. Unfortunately, these secondary effects of the pandemic can increase the risk of certain mental health problems, including depression, anxiety and increased stress. Reviews of research have shown that gardening and food growing can have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. Benefits include; reduction in stress levels, increase in social interaction, increase in physical activity/ exercise and an increase in consumption of healthy fruit and veg.
Let’s Grow Together is a project delivered by MYMY to encourage and support members of our community to get outdoors, become more involved in nature and support new connections in the community. Along the way, we hope to develop some basic skills and support people in getting involved in growing while having a positive impact on your physical and mental wellbeing.
The project involves a visit to the persons home, the building of a raised bed where feasible along with support and tools to get the person started with some outdoor growing. From here we can support the person with making connections in the local community where appropriate.
